WHO WE ARE

Built by coastal scientists and engineers

SeaSignal Technologies was founded by a coastal oceanographer and a hydraulic engineer.

With a vision to build something meaningful, Jesse brings decades of field experience from around the world. He has academic and field expertise in geology, geophysics, remote sensing, oceanography and coastal engineering.

He earned a Bachelor of Science in geology from the University of Louisiana and a Master of Science in geology from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

He then gained first-hand experience as a coastal engineer working throughout the Pacific and Arctic oceans for several years before returning to UNC–Chapel Hill to earn his doctorate in oceanography.

Jesse is passionate about developing and applying new observational technologies to solve challenging problems. He has a career’s worth of examples, including:

  • Combining shallow-water reflection seismics with oceanographic sensors to explain the development of the Carolina Capes
  • Developing a technique to map sandbar movement with interferometry combined with a mobile radar to shed light on the formation of shoreline erosional hotspots
  • Using chirp seismic profiles in different orientations to map voids in critical water retention structures such as locks and dams.

Jesse also has expertise in time-series analysis, data processing, field instrumentation and collection. He leveraged this expertise to procure a diverse funding record that generated many peer-reviewed publications and conference proceedings spanning topics from cyclone frequency, shoreline erosion, sea level rise, deforestation effects on coastal resources, remote sensing, shallow reflection acoustics, seabed morphodynamics, and marine archeology.

Jonathan Waddell

Jonathan Waddell

Co-founder

Read bioHide bio, Jonathan Waddell

Jon is driven to create novel approaches to automation and to provide accessible, meaningful data for clients.

Jon is a hydraulic engineer with more than a decade of experience, specializing in measuring, modeling and real-time analysis of complex water and coastal systems. He has extensive experience working within federal agencies, supporting water resources management and coastal resilience throughout one of the largest sources of fresh water on the planet, the Great Lakes.

Jon’s experience combines hydraulics, field instrumentation and advanced data analytics, including developing flow estimation methods for large rivers, Bayesian water-balance models, and automated coastal flooding analyses for flood mitigation planning. He developed innovative remotely deployable coastal radar systems to collect and analyze nearshore wave and current data in real time, as well as ultrasonic sensors for monitoring water levels at remote sites.

His work integrates in-situ sensing, statistical and machine learning methods, and software development to deliver actionable insights for coastal and hydraulic engineering applications.

He earned a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in civil engineering from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He also holds a Bachelor of Arts in history from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas.

Jon is a named author in numerous academic publications, including the Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering; Engineer Research and Development Center and Journal of Great Lakes Research.
